| SonosnetSonosnet is the key differentiator between the Sonos controller and the Desktop or iTouch/iPhone controllers and is therefore worthy of further explanation and putting in context.
Sonosnet is Sonos' wireless mesh network. It is unique to Sonos and it means that your network of Zone Players don't just talk to each other, they talk to each other via each other. This means the wireless range expands with the expansion of the Sonos Zones and Zone Bridges you have in your home.
The CR100 and CR200 controllers talk Sonosnet. Think of this as a mobile phone to mobile phone mast relationship and you'll get the picture. Your iTouch/iPhone does not talk Sonosnet and therefore they must talk directly to your wireless router. In large houses, this means wireless range issues or complicated and costly network expansion kit needs to be set up.
With Sonosnet, your Sonos controller is instantly available. With the iPhone, you may need to wait for its network connection before then starting the Sonos application software and waiting then for that to load. This is perfectly acceptable in many cases, especially on a tight budget, but the ergonomics and technology built in to the CR100 and CR200 controllers make for an enhanced user experience.
Importantly, the iPhone/iTouch do not talk Sonosnet and so their range is limited to the range you get from your wireless router. |
